Fortress Gonio in Batumi

Kynological Federation of Georgia together with Batumi City Authorities organize an excurssion to ancient fortress Gonio-Apsaros for Shows participants and guests.

Fortress Gonio-Apsaros – located in Adjara, Georgia, at the Black Sea shore. The oldest data about the fortress is dated back to the 1st century AD. By that time, it was known as Apsarunt Fortress. The name Gonio was given later in 12th century. Because of its advantageous location, strength and well-developed inner infrastructure it was constantly an aim of enemies.

There is a tomb of the Apostle Mathew inside the fortress – he was twelfth apostle instead of Judas Iscariot and preached Christianity in Georgia with apostles St. Andrew and St. Simon.

It has been decades that archaeological excavation has been held in the fortress and each layer gives big number of interesting discoveries.

Please inform Shows organizers beforehand should you wish to visit fortress Gonio-Apsaros.
