Kutaisi
History of Kutaisi

Kutaisi is an administrative, political and cultural centre of the Western Georgia.
Kutaisi is the most ancient city of Georgia, its history numbers more than 3000 years. Kutaisi was a capital of Kolhida realm and we learn about it from the Myth of Argonauts, where it had been mentioned under its old name Aia (later Kutaia, Kutaisi). Aiety, the Great King of Kolhida resided here and this is where the mythical Golden Fleece, the dream of the whole ancient world was kept.
From those times till nowadays Kutaisi preserves its significance in Georgian governmental and cultural life. There is a range of tourist, cultural, religious places of interest and natural sights in the city and neighbourhood.
Kutaisi was a capital of Georgia for several centuries. It is worth to mention that reunion of Georgian lands started right from here, as well as to mention that the Greatest Georgian Zar Saint David The Builder is buried on the territory of monastery founded by him not far from Kutaisi.
The Georgian Parliament is located in Kutaisi as from the year 2012.
